Royal Blackwood is a wood derived from Purple Heart (Peltogyne catingae) through a controlled hydrothermal process that permanently darkens its natural colour to deep black tones, without the use of dyes or artificial pigments. This treatment accelerates the wood’s natural oxidation and improves stability while preserving its structural properties.

In lutherie, Royal Blackwood is mainly used for guitar backs and sides when a dark, uniform and elegant appearance is desired. In its figured version, it combines a deep black colour with a pronounced curly figure, adding visual depth and movement.
