The neck is a fundamental part of the instrument due to the tension it must withstand from the strings. That’s why, when we talk about neck blanks, we always refer to pieces cut with growth rings as close to 90º as possible—except for rare cases with woods like Hard Maple, where the cut is usually made the other way.
