They can be considered the lighter counterpart of carved tops: they fulfil the same structural and aesthetic purpose but are more affordable, more flexible and lighter. Their reduced thickness simplifies carving, allows clean contouring and helps reduce the overall weight of the instrument while maintaining a striking visual presence.
