Overview AAA American Curly Maple Bass / Electric Guitar Body Top:

How many times have you not been mesmerized by the sight of a curly maple top on an electric guitar? Ever since Gibson released the legendary Les Paul sunburst in '58, flame maple tops have captured the imagination of guitarists around the world. It's hard to imagine artists like Jimmy Page or Slash not having a guitar with a flame maple top in their hands.

Hardness, machinability and lustrous appearance with almost no need to be lacquered. These are some of the many virtues of maple. That is why it has been used for centuries in many parts of musical instruments. That tradition is what led to bring its use for guitar tops. Attempting to emulate the wonderful look of the backs of classical instruments such as violins and cellos.

Curly maple is a wood that receives finishes extremely well, be they polyurethanes, nitrocellulose, gomalac, stains, etc. It is the stains in particular that can spectacularly enhance the flamed lines. In the category Dyes you can find a wide selection. It may be the best choice for a wood with these qualities.

How are American curly maple tops graded?

American flame maple (acer saccharum) pieces are different from our European curly maple (acer pseudoplatanus). Its caramel color has a certain pinkish hue. It is also harder than European flame maple.

In the AAA grade you will find some of our best maple tops. Good amount of flame, with little separation between the stripes. Uniform color for the most part, with no stains or knots on the part to be used. Combine them with any of our bodies, you have more than twenty different woods to choose from.
