Dunlop 6100 frets are among the brand's best sellers. The roll presentation is the most cost-effective in terms of product quantity/price ratio. Dunlop has been the most renowned fret manufacturer for decades. Brands such as Fender, Gibson or PRS use Dunlop frets in their models and a plethora of other luthiers use them in both construction and repair works. Made of nickel silver with a nickel content of 18% for greater hardness, Dunlop frets are a common choice and are present in guitar workshops and factories all over the world.
How do I choose the right fret?
This is a key factor when building or repairing a guitar, no doubt about it. The basic criteria when choosing a fret should take into account its shape (in the part that overhangs the fretboard, also known as crown) and the material they are made of. The width and height of the fret crown have a decisive influence on the feel of the player's playing. Of course, each person has his or her own preferences, but we can list a number of traits that are undeniable. The lower the frets, the more comfortable the feeling when playing chords. This is because less effort is needed to press the strings. Conversely, higher frets help when performing techniques such as bendings and have a longer lifespan, as there is more material for successive fret dressings. As for the width, the wider the frets, the more comfortable the contact with the neck will be, but it will also require a more precise work when recontouring them to avoid intonation problems.
If we talk about material, traditionally nickel silver has been used. This is an alloy composed of zinc, copper and nickel that has the ideal balance between hardness, abrasion resistance and ductility. Different formulations can be found with a zinc content ranging from 12% to 18%. The higher this percentage, the greater the hardness of the fret. In recent years, frets made of other materials such as bronze or stainless steel have appeared, offering new possibilities. In this last case keep in mind that due to its hardness, you will need special tools to work it.
