Birdseye maple is a peculiar and mysterious condition of maple. It has a distinctive pattern that resembles small, swirling dots that interrupt the smooth lines of the grain. It is somewhat reminiscent of the burl found in the roots of other woods, but it is very different: the small knots that form the burl are here missing.

The cause of this phenomenon is unknown. Research on the growth of bird's eye maple has so far ruled out theories that it is due to pecking birds deforming the wood grain or a pathogenic fungus causing it to warp. However, no one has demonstrated a complete understanding of the combination of climate, soil, tree variety, insect, virus or genetic mutation that might produce the effect.
