Sandarac resin is a solid natural resin with a light yellow color and brittle texture. It is primarily obtained from the Tetraclinis articulata tree, a member of the cypress family (Cupressaceae) that grows in the Atlas region of Morocco. This resin has been used for centuries in the preparation of varnishes and artistic restoration products.
In lutherie, it is appreciated for its ability toadd hardness and gloss to varnish blends, especially when combined with shellac. Its transparency and easy solubility in alcohol make it an excellent choice for finishes that preserve the natural appearance of the wood while offering long-lasting protection.
It is especially suitable for traditional formulations, both for new instruments and for restoring antique ones.
