Purpleheart Wood for Woodturning and Carving

Purpleheart stands out for its vivid purple color and excellent dimensional stability. With a density of 880 kg/m³, it has a fine, compact texture that works well for turning and carving, though it requires sharp tools and some experience. Its color deepens after cutting and may darken over time or with oil finishes.

Native to Central America and known botanically as Peltogyne pubelcens, this wood is perfect for turned bowls, decorative figures, handles, or striking inlays. It sands easily and takes wax or oil finishes very well—especially if you want to preserve its unique tone. In our store, you’ll find fine abrasives, protective waxes, and carving knives to work it precisely.
