Description of the Bass Bar for Violin/Viola European Spruce

The European spruce strip used to make the harmonic bar of a violin is a key piece in the structure of the instrument. This carefully selected block of wood comes from the European spruce (Picea abies), a species known for its lightness and excellent acoustic resonance, essential characteristics to maximize the projection and sound quality of the violin.

The harmonic bar, placed under the top of the violin, has the function of distributing the vibrations produced by the strings, increasing the stability of the top and improving the overall resonance of the instrument. In addition, its shape and dimensions directly influence the tonal character of the violin, so the material and its workmanship are fundamental.

European spruce is preferred because of its straight grain, low density and ability to transmit sound efficiently, which contributes to better acoustic projection. In addition, it is a slow-growing wood, which ensures a uniform structure and high tonal quality.

This particular piece has been worked to close to the final dimensions, which eases the luthier's work during the construction process. This saves time and minimizes the risk of error, as the luthier only needs to make precise adjustments to perfectly match the specific characteristics of the violin.
