<p>There is no doubt that choosing the right fret is a basic decision when it comes to <strong>building or repairing a guitar</strong>. The basic criteria when choosing a fret should consider the shape of the fretboard (the part of the fretboard that shows through the fretboard, or crown) and the fret material. The width and height of the fret crown clearly influence on the player's playing feeling. Naturally, everyone has his or her own preferences, but we can list a few essential factors. The lower the frets, the more comfortable it feels when playing chords. This happens because less effort is required to tighten the strings. It is common to find this type of frets on vintage guitars. In contrast, high frets help when performing techniques such as bending and have a longer useful life, as there is more material to carry out successive fret grinding. As for the width, the greater the width, the more comfortable the contact with the neck will be, but it will also require more precise work when crowning them to avoid intonation problems.</p>\r\n
<p>In terms of material, alpaca is the traditional choice. This is an alloy made of zinc, copper and nickel that has the ideal balance between hardness, abrasion resistance and ductility. We can find different formulas with a zinc presence that ranges from 12% to 18%. The higher this percentage, the greater the fret hardness. Frets made of other materials such as bronze or stainless steel have appeared in recent years and offer new possibilities. For stainless steel frets you will need special tools to work with it, due to its hardness.</p>\r\n
