Los criterios básicos a la hora de elegir un traste deben tener en cuenta su forma (en la parte que asoma del diapasón, o corona) y el material del que estén hechos. El ancho y alto de la corona del traste tienen una influencia decisiva en la sensación del intérprete al tocar. Por supuesto, cada persona tiene sus propias preferencias pero podemos enumerar una serie de características que son innegables. Cuanto más bajos los trastes, más cómoda es la sensación al hacer acordes. Esto se debe a que hay que realizar menos esfuerzo para apretar las cuerdas. Es común encontrar este tipo de trastes en <strong>guitarras vintage</strong>.
