Le micro P-90 a été développé par Gibson en 1946 comme une évolution de ses premiers micros à simple bobinage . Son design, attribué à Walter Fuller , comportait une bobine large et plate avec des aimants Alnico placés sous les plots réglables , ce qui lui conférait un son plus chaud et plus puissant que les micros de type Fender de l’époque. À l’origine, il a été utilisé sur des modèles emblématiques comme la Gibson Les Paul Goldtop de 1952 et les archtops de la marque. Bien qu’il ait été remplacé dans les années 50 par les micros humbuckers , le P-90 reste très apprécié pour son ton épais et articulé , équilibrant brillance et chaleur d’une manière unique.
