Fabriquées en alpaca (maillechort) avec une teneur en nickel de 18 % pour une dureté accrue, les frettes Dunlop sont un choix courant et on les trouve dans les ateliers de guitare et les usines du monde entier.</p><h2 class="MsoNormal">Comment choisir la bonne frette ?</h2><p>C'est une <strong>décision fondamentale</strong> lors de la construction ou de la réparation d'une guitare, sans aucun doute. Les critères de base pour le choix d'une frette <strong>doivent tenir compte de sa forme</strong> (la partie qui surplombe la touche, ou couronne) <strong>et du matériau</strong> dont elle est faite. La largeur et la hauteur de la couronne de la frette ont une influence décisive sur la sensation de jeu du musicien. Bien sûr, chacun a ses propres préférences, mais nous pouvons énumérer un certain nombre de caractéristiques indéniables. Plus les frettes sont basses, plus on se sent à l'aise en jouant des accords. En effet, il y a moins d'efforts à faire pour tendre les cordes. A l'inverse, des frettes plus élevées facilitent la réalisation de techniques telles que les<em> bindings</em> et ont une durée de vie plus longue, car il y a plus de matière pour les réaffûtages successifs de la frette. Quant à la largeur, plus elle est importante, plus le contact avec le manche sera confortable, mais elle nécessitera aussi un travail plus précis au moment de les tailler pour éviter les problèmes d'intonation.</p><p>En ce qui concerne le matériau, on utilise traditionnellement l' <strong>alpaca</strong>. Il s'agit d'un alliage composé de zinc, de cuivre et de nickel qui présente un équilibre idéal entre dureté, résistance à l'abrasion et ductilité. On trouve différentes formulations avec une contenance en <strong>zinc allant de 12 % à 18 %</strong>. Plus ce pourcentage est élevé, plus la frette est dure. Ces dernières années, des frettes fabriquées dans d'autres matériaux tels que le <strong>bronze</strong> ou <strong>l'acier inoxydable</strong> sont apparues et offrent de nouvelles possibilités.
