His work on perfecting the design of the flamenco guitar helped establish it as a fine instrument, very different in character to the classical guitar.There are two basic ways in which the flamenco guitar differs from the classical guitar. The first is in the choice of woods to use, and the second is in the design and thickness of the component parts. The strutting in the flamenco guitar is usually kept quite simple, because the rather free, open, earthy sound is best achieved if the soundboard is not too controlled in how it vibrates. Santos Hernandez used seven fan struts, but no closing struts at the lower end of the guitar.The weight of the guitar is kept to a minimum by using a thin soundboard, and thin Cypress for the back and ribs (which is much lighter than Rosewood).If you are planning to make your first Flamenco guitar, then this is the ideal model to follow.

Fleta made his first guitar in 1930, having already constructed many violins and cellos. After hearing Andre Segovia playing in 1955, Fleta was inspired with the determination to make good guitars, and he produced a guitar for Segovia, which was played by the master all over the world. From the 1970s, when he collaborated closely with the guitarist Julian Bream, Romanillos' guitars began to be appreciated all over the world. He was primarily an artist, painting in the Impressionist style, and for many years he taught painting in Paris. He was a self-taught guitar maker, and he made his instruments by studying guitars made by Torres. He also had the opportunity to observe the Paris based maker, Julian Gomez Ramirez, who was a close friend. Bouchet had a natural gift as a luthier, and Julian Bream owned three of his guitars. Bouchet is often thought of as having been the first luthier to introduce the "bridge bar" (a large strut glued to the under-surface of the soundboard, under the position of the bridge-saddle. In fact Bouchet was the first to explain that he had seen this in a guitar by Torres. Bouchet liked the idea, and he experimented with this as a way of controlling the sound and stabilizing the bridge. Although he did not make a large number of guitars, they were widely sought after, and nowadays they are extremely valuable.
